Film Discussion – Join or Die – Online

Watch a movie on your own, then attend a discussion of it made richer by the wide variety of viewpoints that participants hold.
We choose films that address social, political or cultural issues that are relevant to society today. They may highlight liberal-leaning, conservative-leaning or independent themes, or feature actors or directors from opposite sides of the political spectrum.
We’ll be discussing the film Join or Die. “Join or Die” is a 99-minute, 2023 documentary that spotlights Robert Putnam, author of “Bowling Alone,” and his finding that America’s divisions today are rooted in the decline of our social capital as fewer Americans join clubs and organizations. Putnam says that joining clubs is key to our physical health, our personal happiness, and to halting America’s civic unravelling.

In addition to or instead of watching the movie, you can familiarize yourself with Putnam’s book “Bowling Alone.” We’ll be leading a discussion on the importance of joining groups, and the experience of attendees or people they know from a previous generation with being part of an organization.
