Political violence and heightened rhetoric has turned up the intensity of an already tumultuous election season, adding to the fears and uncertainty on both the Left and the Right. Is there a way to stay grounded through this moment? We are joined by Dr. Bill Doherty, a “citizen therapist” who offers insight to help understand not just our own fear, but the fears held by the other side, and shares concrete strategies people on all sides can use to give voice to our deepest concerns without succumbing to the most dangerous tendencies of our divided nation.

Episode 12: How to Citizen

Is it the facts that get in the way in our politics, or our stories? Baratunde Thurston is a renowned comedian, activist, and PBS host who knows a lot about how the stories we tell about ourselves can either unlock our civic power… or make us forget we even have it. We’ll zoom in on two unforgettable times Baratunde crossed big divides and what those clashes can teach us, and we’ll hear his four pillars of “how to citizen” — as a verb, not a noun — to help us wield that power daily. Then Monica and April close us out with a clash of their own, unleashing their own stories about citizenship to see where their different politics lead them to think differently about the concept and the many issues that surround it.

  1. Ciaran and John should flip a coin to determine which one gets President and which VP! What a sterling example of Red/Blue conversation (it wasn’t a debate). The issue for the country: is such a conversation possible between people who are not so marvelously articulate and abundantly prepared?

  2. It was very uplifting to see/hear your openness to opinions that are not in alignment with your deepest feelings/thoughts toward the issues. It gives me hope – more hope – for America.

    Thank you.

  3. Wood justifies the assault on womens rights. Turns himself into a pretzel to make this grotesque usurpation of power by a crony court seem ok. He’s disgusting. I hate conservatives for this reason. They want “contextualism” to only support their EXTREME and MINORITY views. And please understand that I am a very kind, hard working, responsible, empathetic, reasonable person. So don’t try to paint me as some radical, hating liberal. That’s a total cop out. What we would expect from psycho, tyrannical conservatives. Punch me in the face, and then blame my face for getting in the way of your hand.

  4. If you don’t know anything, why am I listening to you? Stay out of my womb and those of my nieces. There is no greater economic reality than raising a child. If you are not prepared to SUPPORT that unborn life – like they do in Scandinavia – then back the f off.

  5. Marsha Williams

I seek out videos featuring John especially because he is so thoughtful in elucidating the conservative way of thinking without the hype and rancor. And Ciara’s is always good at acknowledging what is true and useable in the other’s opinion even if he believes another way. Let’s have more of these discussions! I highly recommend them as models for us all.
