SMU Law Professor among Those Urging Trump Voters to Reconsider Based on American Principles

Critics of Donald Trump are hoping to reach his supporters by arguing that he lacks, among other traits, self-control, honesty and respect for the rule of law.

A Southern Methodist University law professor is one of nearly two dozen academics urging Donald Trump supporters to reconsider their vote, saying he falls short of six qualities essential to American democracy.

Dale Carpenter, who teaches at the Dedman School of Law, agreed to sign the letter after it was drafted and circulated by a group of academics and researchers with widely varying political ideologies. Carpenter considers himself a libertarian conservative.

“I have generally identified as a Republican,” he said. “But Donald Trump has made that hard.”

A native of Boulder, Colorado, Mia didn’t know many Trump supporters—and she was nervous to engage with them. “I was like, ‘Don’t they hate women? Don’t they hate black people?’” she said. “That was my initial belief because that’s what I had heard about people who voted for Trump.” But she quickly realized she was wrong. During the first Braver Lens session, Mia was able to connect with conservatives in the group and recognize their points of commonality. “When we met, they showed their pictures, and explained their life stories, and I was able to see where our values overlap,” she said.
