A native of Boulder, Colorado, Mia didn’t know many Trump supporters—and she was nervous to engage with them. “I was like, ‘Don’t they hate women? Don’t they hate black people?’” she said. “That was my initial belief because that’s what I had heard about people who voted for Trump.” But she quickly realized she was wrong. During the first Braver Lens session, Mia was able to connect with conservatives in the group and recognize their points of commonality. “When we met, they showed their pictures, and explained their life stories, and I was able to see where our values overlap,” she said.

    There is a difference between racist thinking and racist behavior. You cannot control what I think. There are regulations on my behavior.

    Really appreciate the discussions – it’s validating to hear my thoughts spoken aloud (I’m NOT alone in this contemporary Twilight Zone!). Also appreciate respectfully presented opposing views, rather than parrot ranting that is rampant in my local community. The respectful nature and pace help me to be willing to press on and press in.

    These forums/debates are great! Can you make them easier to find in one place on your website? I’d love to see them in their own section, e.g., What We Do>America’s Public Forum or What We Do>Debates, with all past debates posted there and easily browsable. They’re such great resources, and right now they’re a bit buried!
