Show us your Braver Angels moments

By: Rita Chisum

As someone who enjoys learning about what history has to teach, I am so thankful for our simple, but very informative, Braver Angels Weekday and Weekend Newsletters. I love the written word but have a special affinity for visual images, so am thrilled that our Weekday edition offers a peek into how our community is holding America together all across our nation.

On April 20, 2021, we featured our very first “Braver Angels Across America” HAT Photo in the newsletter to offer encouraging glimpses into the faces and places of Braver Angels throughout our nation—Red, Blue and everyone beyond and in-between.

With the guidance, instruction and encouragement of our fellow Braver Angels we continue to practice our way to curiosity and civil dialogue in hopes of a deeper understanding of one another’s experiences and perspectives, looking where we can for common ground. We are Americans working together “to build a house united,” to lend our contribution to a better and brighter future for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come.

A phrase that I never anticipated using with the depth of conviction it now holds for me is, “We’re living in historic times!” Braver Angels, I sincerely believe, is making history with our movement.

Please help us to highlight the story of Braver Angels—your story—by following these steps:

  1. Grab your camera
  2. Recruit family, friends, neighbors, or colleagues (across the aisle, if possible)
  3. Find an interesting or favorite spot in your community (optional!)
  4. Snap a photo to share in our Weekday Newsletter and social media. (with a HAT sign if you’ve got one, but OK either way! Note: Only horizontal or square photos can be accepted.)
  5. Send your pic to rchisum@braverangels.org
  6. Await your entry into the Braver Angels record!

Are you part of one of our 70+ local Braver Angels alliances across the country? Snap a group pic at your next alliance gathering! We love those, too!

Any questions, send me a note at rchisum@braverangels.org. From my family in Russellville, Arkansas, to yours, thank you for being part of our community and building the bonds of trust we need to strengthen our democratic republic.

How a Christian conservative found his way to Braver Angels

As a young man, Daniel’s father emerged from a broken, dysfunctional home looking for direction and found it while attending a Billy Graham crusade in Chicago. There, he “walked forward”—committing himself to Jesus Christ and changing the trajectory of his family. Not long after, he married Daniel’s mom, a Christian convert whose grandparents sought refuge in America after escaping pogroms in Europe.

Announcing Braver Angels Advisory Council

Twenty-three leaders who disagree on many things said yes to the same thing this month. They agreed to stand together, publicly, behind the idea that Americans can hold fast to their convictions while staying genuinely curious about the convictions of people on the other side. That’s it. That’s the commitment. For more than nine years, Braver Angels has reached people in every state in the union. The ones who’ve engaged have experienced something that surprises them every time: the relief of disagreeing without contempt, and the discovery that the person across the table is not who the feed said they were.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

Braver Angels is powered by volunteers: everyday people who believe they have a role in bringing out the best in our country. And seeing our volunteers in action—giving their time and energy to bring together individuals who never dreamed they’d be in a room together—has buoyed me through all the political uncertainty.
