We the People’s Forum: Would A Higher Minimum Wage Help American Workers?

Wilk Wilkinson grew up in poverty and worked in low-wage jobs before becoming a manager for a welding supplies and gas distributor. The host of the Derate the Hate podcast, Wilk believes that the American Dream is alive and well for those willing to pursue it– and that raising the federal minimum wage would be a short-sighted response that could result in more problems.
Corrie Zech worked for low wages at McDonald’s for thirteen years before leaving that job to enroll in college. She thinks it’s a good thing that workers in low-wage jobs are quitting their jobs and demanding higher pay and better working conditions — and she thinks raising the federal minimum wage is one of the first things America should do to protect American workers going forward.
During this We the People’s Forum, we’ll discuss:
- How Wilk and Corrie’s respective life experiences have informed their view about the minimum wage;
- Whether they have any points of common ground on the minimum wage;
- What they see as key to ensuring an economically thriving American working class.
During Discussion, anyone with direct experience on the issue is encouraged to share their experience and perspective, and anyone may ask a question.

Together, we’re exploring how We the People can build a more perfect union in a divided America.
