Walk a Mile in My News
November 3 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
Local Focus: New England Region
If you believe that your opponents should not be your enemies, the New England Region invites to Walk a Mile in My News.
About this event
Our news sources impact how we see the world. As a result, staying within our own opinion “echo chambers” may limit our understanding of complex issues and may contribute to polarization.
The Walk a Mile in My News program encourages us to respectfully “reach across the aisle” and get to know people who have different opinions. By participating, we are likely to understand better how those with different views arrive at their position while potentially learning something new about ourselves!
How does this work?
Register by October 3, 2022
Click the registration button to register to participate. You will be asked to fill out a short survey to help us match you with a conversation partner.
Once you register, you will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link for the Kick off Meeting.
Once you are partnered with someone, you and your partner will be introduced to one another via email. Our goal is to notify the partners prior to the Kick off Meeting.
Attend the Kickoff Meeting on October 13 from 7-8:30 PM ET
You will have an opportunity to meet other individuals participating in the program, review the program guidelines, and ask questions. Attendance at the Kickoff is strongly encouraged.
Conversations with your partner(s) between October 13 – November 3
We ask each participant to commit about 5 hours, in 3-4 sessions, to meet with your partner(s) between the Kickoff and the Reunion dates.
With your partner, you decide what schedule works best, the topics to cover, and how much time to spend together. Guidelines are provided and reviewed during the kick off meeting to help facilitate your conversations.
Attend the Reunion Meeting on November 3 from 7-8:30 PM ET
Teams will have an opportunity to share inspiration, challenges, learnings and potential commonalities. Attendance at the Reunion is optional but strongly encouraged.
Walk a Mile Pledge
This program is guided but self-directed. Its success depends on everyone following an agreed upon code of conduct. We know opinions and viewpoints will differ, sometimes strongly. Given this, we ask everyone to take the WMMN Pledge:
- I will approach my partner’s views with curiosity, striving to understand their opinions and reasoning.
- I will respect my partner’s dignity at all times and recognize their right to hold the viewpoints that they do.
- I understand that any exchange of views contains some degree of advocacy, but I will not seek to convince the other person to change their mind. The purpose of this program is understanding, not persuasion.
- I will commit to spending the necessary time to meet with my partner over the three week period (estimated around 5 hours).
