Stand-up comedy is having a moment. From TikTok clips to Netflix specials to the late night talk shows, comedians are making their mark on popular culture. Sales for live events are up, and heaven knows we could use a laugh

Here at Braver Angels Debates, we are curious about the role of comedy in our national life. Does comedy unite, or divide?

Some comedy taps into our common humanity and brings us together; a good live show will turn a theater of strangers into a family. But comedy can also be divisive, highlighting our differences, scoffing, and mocking others. Some jokes are insightful and revealing; other jokes may just be cheap shots. Pushing boundaries is a common comedic tactic that can startle us and elicit big laughs.

But how far is too far? Sure, a comedian can say anything they want, but at what cost? Are there things that are too serious to joke about?

Join us and Madam Chair Cynthia O’Brien to debate the resolution: Resolved: There are things we shouldn’t joke about.
