Common Ground Workshop – Better Care Options for Gender Questioning Youth
November 23 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm EST
Exploring better care for youth experiencing distress about their gender including puberty blockers, mental health, and other care issues.
Restricted Event: Applicants will be contacted by the organizer before the event and, depending on the balance of registrations, some participants may be asked to move to an observer spot.
Braver Angels’ Non-Partisan Common Ground Workshop brings together people who disagree about a topic to talk about their connection to the issues and the potential solutions. Join us online for a Common Ground Workshop on Addressing Better Care Options for Gender Questioning Youth.
Goals of the Common Ground Workshop:
- To delve into a single issue where opinions differ, and learn how each other sees the problem.
- To delineate areas of common ground and points of agreement.
- To learn something that might be helpful to others in our community and the nation.
Participants will engage in small and large-group discussions with individuals of both the same and different viewpoints. We will strive for an equal balance of opinions: 4 to 8 people on each side.
The Issue: Better care for youth who are experiencing distress about their gender has been evolving. The use of puberty blockers is supported or questioned by some, and condemned by others. A greater number of gender-questioning youth are seeking care while clinical prescription of puberty blockers has been problematized and the body of research about their use has grown, raising questions for further research.
This pilot Common Ground topic, sponsored through the Braver Angels Equality Caucus, welcomes Braver Angels to engage in this dynamic issue where all aspects of care can be discussed (mental health, social transition, medical interventions, etc.). The Common Ground workshop model requires a balanced participation from two divergent points of view. For this pilot topic, we are asking you to identify which of the following perspectives closely represents your point of view:
- Do you tend to endorse the current practice of medical providers prescribing “puberty blockers” to gender-questioning youth?
- Do you tend to endorse a moratorium on medical providers prescribing “puberty blockers” for gender-questioning youth?
For this workshop, participants will receive some pre-reading articles, sourced from divergent perspectives.
Who can come? Participation will be confirmed by the Organizers.
You should be able to honestly answer “yes” to the following question: Are you willing to listen to the other side, speak with respect to the other side, and work hard to find common ground?
