Families Over Politics: Staying Connected Across Differences

12/21/2025 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm CST

Host Organization: Braver Angels-Illinois Statewide Zoom Alliance
Partner Org(s): Social Ties Lab at the University of Kentucky
State/Region: IL
Setting: Online

This presentation is the first of a two-part series by Co-Directors of the Social Ties Lab at the University of Kentucky about understanding parent-child relationships in polarized times. They will present what we know from research about how families navigate political differences and engage in “memorable messages” – the powerful statements from parents or children that shape how we view politics, values, and one another.

This Zoom session will include breakout rooms for participants to share experiences with family differences and how they are handled.

Finally, participants will hear about the research study that is underway to gather more communication strategies for parents and adult children to bridge political differences.

Part 2 of the Social Ties Lab’s presentation, to be held in early 2026, will be titled “What Helps? Insights and Recommendations from Our Study of Families in Political Conflict.”
