The Declaration of Independence at 250: Encountering America’s Founding Text

As America marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Braver Angels invites you to spend an evening in thoughtful conversation with one of the most influential documents in American history.

The Declaration is familiar to most of us. Its phrases—“all men are created equal,” “unalienable Rights,” and “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”—have echoed across generations. But familiarity can sometimes keep us from slowing down and asking deeper questions:

What argument is the Declaration actually making?

What does it say about human equality, individual rights, government, and the relationship between citizens and those who govern?

Why have these words continued to inspire reflection and debate for 250 years?

This evening will not be a lecture or a political debate. Instead, participants will take part in a guided close reading of the Declaration. Together, we will focus on the words, structure, reasoning, and ideas of the document itself.

No special historical knowledge or preparation is required. People of all backgrounds and viewpoints are welcome. We will come together as fellow citizens and readers, approaching the text with curiosity, careful listening, and respect for different perspectives.

Participants will meet in small groups led by experienced discussion leaders. At the conclusion, we will reconvene as a full group to share reflections on what we noticed, questioned, and discovered.
