In this time of polarization, many of us avoid conversations with others, even in our community, whose perspectives and opinions differ from our own. We worry that any attempts at discussions will devolve into arguments and acrimony, and result in anger and further divisiveness.
Braver Angels “Depolarizing Within” workshops build skills for having respectful conversations when differences arise. The workshops help us to reframe how we view the other side in the face of political and social-cultural conflicts that are dividing our country. Our ideological conflicts often become personal and are attracting “warriors” based on various issues.
This workshop uses many school-related examples, including: social-emotional learning, book banning, changing long time classic books with modern language, mobile phone use in schools, as well as the rights of parents in public schools. However, this workshop is also relevant for non-school communities — such as communities of worship, social clubs, or educational institutions.
In this workshop you will learn skills and practice them. You’ll learn to:
- Become aware of your own “inner polarizer”
- Disagree with others without demonizing, dismissing, or stereotyping them
- Speak in ways others will want to hear
- Affirm the importance of building relationships
- Feel safe practicing your new skills
Please arrive on time for this highly interactive workshop. Check the time, and the time zone, to be sure you’re coming at the correct time. NOTE: We “close the doors” about 10 minutes after the workshop begins.
