Connecting Compassionately with Others & Oneself

Has your relationship with a relative, friend, or associate been damaged by political differences? Are you feeling resentful, alienated, or guilty because respectful, genuine communication between you has become impossible? Would you be interested in: deepening understanding and compassion, and/or restoring mutual respect? Healing and/or letting go of the relationship?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this practical and experiential workshop is for you. The other person in the relationship is welcome to attend but need not. It may take two to tango, but you can begin healing a worthwhile relationship, and/or letting go of an unhealthy one, by learning and practicing new self-help and communication strategies in this workshop.
Before engaging in mini-roleplays, we will investigate:
• Principles & practices that promote respectful, genuine, and productive dialogue (including mindfulness & empathy); and
• Time-honored ways to let go of resentment and guilt.

Workshop Leader: Barry Nobel has been teaching mindfulness and mindfulness-based conflict engagement since the last millennium. He has taught Mediation at the UO School of Law and Human Relations at Work at LCC. Barry previously worked as a Family Mediator with Lane County, as the Coordinator of the Alameda County Bar Association Pro Bono Program, and as an attorney in private practice. He has also taught at Portland State University, Linfield College, the University of Puget Sound, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Barry earned a JD from the UO School of Law and a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
