Local Focus: Vermont

What does it practically look like to tone down bitterness and hostility, and foster goodwill, even while our values and convictions are so stirred against one another… even while we feel so strongly that the other side is wrong? Together we will consider this question as we seek to create a calm harbor to collect ourselves, hear from one another, and discuss strategies for moving forward constructively.

We will begin by hearing from a few contrasting reactions to the election, and then separate into two breakout rooms with moderators. One room for those who are happy with the results, and one with those who aren’t. We will focus on exploring what might be empowering and effective within our own spheres of influence to confront the gloating or condescension of the winning side, and the despair or hostility of the losing side. Then we will come back together and share our take-aways.

We plan to have a diverse group of participants, representing divergent interests and concerns. Towards this aim, we recognise that it is often a challenge in our heavily blue-leaning state to appeal to cross engagement with minority political voices. There are understandable underlying reasons for this, including: A tendency for red-leaning perspectives to feel misrepresented, undervalued, and demonized. Tangible social consequences for speaking against the grain of popular sentiment. And, a sense of apathy informed by prior negative experiences of trying to engage. These obstacles precisely reflect much of the work ahead of us all towards reconciliation within our communities (and society at large) on the other side of this election.
