Local Community Debate – Resolved: California should enact a wealth tax

Join Braver Angels for a debate on the topic – Resolved: California should enact a wealth tax
California faces tough budget choices and deep divides over how to pay for public health and community services. This Braver Angels debate considers a proposed ballot measure that would levy a wealth tax on ultra-wealthy residents to raise revenue, with dedicated funding streams proposed for public programs such as healthcare, food assistance, and education.
Proponents argue that targeted wealth taxation provides a vital safety net to backfill budget shortfalls and fund critical social programs for vulnerable residents. Conversely, critics warn that taxing assets sets a damaging economic precedent that will drive high earners out of the state and erode long-term tax revenue.
The goal of this debate is to provide a respectful space to listen to both sides of this fiscal question. Participants will explore different perspectives on how to build a strong and sustainable economy for all Californians.
Remember, our resolutions never represent Braver Angels’ stance on any issue, and we alternate between speeches for and against the resolution.
