As divided as our nation is now, can liberals believe using the slogan “Defund the police!” — which many people interpret as “Get rid of the police” — is a good idea? Can conservatives really feel we’ll be better off if Senate Republicans overpower Democrats to install another Supreme Court justice before the results of the presidential election are known?

In this election of strident voices of polarization and hate, it has never been more important to remember that citizen is a mighty high office.
