This 2009 book by journalist Bill Bishop and sociologist Robert Cushing examines how America has been sorting itself into demographically,  culturally, and politically homogeneous neighborhoods and counties, and how that is leading to mutual incomprehension and political extremism.  It reveals that our current polarization can’t just be blamed on the media or politicians, but is actually geographically rooted at the neighborhood level.
