National Film Club discussion of “The Harvest: Integrating Mississippi’s Schools”
May 16 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm EDT
Watch a movie on your own, then attend a discussion of it made richer by the wide variety of viewpoints that participants hold.
We choose films that address social, political or cultural issues that are relevant to society today. They may highlight liberal-leaning, conservative-leaning or independent themes, or feature actors or directors from opposite sides of the political spectrum.
We’ll be discussing the film: The Harvest: Integrating Mississippi’s Schools.
The Harvest is a 2023, 107-minute documentary by writer and journalist Douglas Blackmon. Blackmon revisits Leland, Mississippi, where he was a white, six-year-old when this small town integrated its public schools in 1970. We will talk about what happened in Leland and also address the question: Why are American schools still so highly segregated?
