High School Ethnic Studies Course: Fishbowl Webinar Event

Want to understand the different sides of the controversial debate on California’s high school ethnic studies course? Join our online event on September 4, 2025, for a courageous conversation with panelists representing several perspectives. We’ll explore the complex issues to foster mutual understanding and respectful disagreement.
Lack of state funding to support this policy requirement means the state no longer requires this for graduation. But school districts can choose to make Ethnic Studies a graduation requirement.
After introductions, John Fensterwald, a reporter for EdSource, will take s few minutes to provide background on the law that was passed into law in 2021 and will describe its current status as of September 2025.
The format for the conversation will be a “fishbowl” and not a debate. Four proponents and four opponents will share their views about the Ethnic Studies course. This discussion format is designed to enable participants and audience members to better understand the complex set of issues surrounding this policy by listening and being curious rather than being confrontational.
