“Conclave” – Screening and Discussion

October 2 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EDT

Host Organization: Long Island Alliance
Partner Org(s): Crossing Party Lines Long Island, Unitarian Universalist Society of South Suffolk
State/Region: NY
Setting: In-person

Join us for a Crossing Party Lines – Braver Angels Long Island Alliance conversation inspired by the film “Conclave”. We’ll view a few powerful scenes together and open a dialogue on how the story speaks to our polarized times. Please watch the full movie ahead of time (available on Amazon Prime) so you’ll be ready to dive in.

Conclave follows the election of a new pope amid secrecy, politics, and moral complexity. At its heart, it is the journey of a leader who wrestles with faith, doubt, identity, and duty. The film dares to suggest that certainty can be the enemy of humility and tolerance—and that true faith may arise through questioning rather than absolute conviction. In doing so, it challenges assumptions from across the spectrum, offering both moments of comfort and moments of discomfort.

We’ll be joined by a couple of special guests to deepen the conversation including Vicki Toale; Catholic Sister and Former Professor of Religion at Malloy University.

Discussion Questions:

What touched you most about this film?
Which character were you rooting for, and why?
If you could step into the Sistine Chapel during this conclave, how do you think you would vote?
What role does certainty play in how we engage with those we disagree with today?
Can doubt actually strengthen our faith or values?
How does humility create space for tolerance?
In what ways, if at all, does Conclave challenge both liberal and conservative perspectives?

We choose films that address social, political or cultural issues that are relevant to society today. They may highlight liberal-leaning, conservative-leaning or independent themes, or feature actors or directors from opposite sides of the political spectrum.
