Braver Angels Local Debate: Phasing Out Fossil Fuels

America runs on fossil fuels. Oil, gas, and coal power our homes, our cars, and our economy. But are they powering us toward prosperity—or ruin?
For some, phasing out fossil fuels isn’t just about climate change—it’s about survival in the 21st-century economy. They argue that the future belongs to nations investing in clean technology, and that sticking with fossil fuels risks leaving us behind. Others see it very differently: they argue that a forced transition is economic suicide—destroying jobs, spiking costs, and ripping apart communities built on energy production. And still others insist that fossil fuels remain the foundation of reliable, affordable energy, no matter what the future holds.
Where do you stand?
This is your chance to speak your mind, challenge others, and be challenged yourself. In a Braver Angels Debate, there are no “gotcha” moments—just a structured, passionate conversation where Americans wrestle together with the big questions that divide us.

About this Event
Resolved: Phasing out fossil fuels is an economic necessity.
You probably haven’t experienced anything like a Braver Angels Debate. This is a highly structured conversation in which a group of people think together, listen carefully to one another, and allow themselves to be touched and perhaps changed by each other’s ideas. When done well, everyone walks out a little closer to the truth, more aware of the validity in opposing views, and with tighter community relationships.
