Beyond the Headlines: Real Conversations on Immigration

Join Stanford students and community members from across generations for a frank, thoughtful conversation about immigration at a moment when the topic feels especially urgent nationwide. We’ll take up questions like how to meet labor and skills needs while supporting local employment, how to secure our borders while improving our increasingly unworkable legal immigration system, and how to invest limited tax dollars in ways that reflect our values.
We’ll also look at how immigration policies shape daily life in our communities—what fairness and dignity mean in practice, and how all of this connects to deeper questions of identity and culture in a nation formed by immigrants. Together, we’ll ask, “What ties us together as a nation?”
The morning begins with a skill-building workshop on navigating challenging conversations—practical skills for listening across differences, sharing personal stories, and staying engaged when issues are complex or contentious.
Multi-generational discussions will follow, welcoming a wide range of perspectives and lived experiences, asking not only “Where are we now?” but “Can we imagine a better way forward?”
