America’s Public Forum- The Age of Spectacle: How Unearned Affluence, Excessive Leisure, and Lazy Thinking Destroy Democracy

From a series of events bridging the worlds of ideas and depolarization, hosted by Braver Angels and friends, “America’s Public Forum.”
Why does American politics these days, in all its polarization and partisanship, feel profoundly shriller and harsher, regardless of the actual stakes of any election or policy debate? Are our politicians driving the divide? Is the public demanding the divide? Is there something else—technovelty in the information age, an endless hemorrhage of social trust, a withering of the old habits of mind and heart American democracy grew under—at play? And if lazy thinking and a broadly-shared addiction to the spectacle of public life over its substance do make our institutions dysfunctional, our culture coarse and decadent, and our social life far more painful than it needs to be—can anyone do anything about it?
Join us for our final America’s Public Forum event of 2021 to ponder these questions with an old friend and supporter of Braver Angels, Adam Garfinkle. He has a knack for taking obscure questions of philosophy and sociology, and demonstrating how thoughtful work on them illuminates our ongoing questions of institutions, culture, and the churning wheels of politics; he is equally astute in explaining how less-than-thoughtful work on these questions paralyzes the public discourse and strips us of the mental tools to understand what’s going on. The America’s Public Forum Team is excited to host him.
This event is free and open for all, and a recording will be available on the Braver Angels YouTube channel a few days after. Luke Nathan Phillips will serve as MC.
