Carthage College, originally named The Literary and Theological Institute of the Lutheran Church in the Far West, was founded in 1847 in Hillsboro, Illinois, largely supported by area Lutheran congregations.
In 1852 the institution relocated to Springfield, Illinois, and became Illinois State University. During this period, a rising Springfield attorney and political leader, Abraham Lincoln, served on its Board of Trustees (Lincoln served as a Trustee through his first year in the White House) and his and Mary’s oldest son, Robert, was a student there.
In 1870, the institution relocated to Carthage, Illinois, changing its name to Carthage College, and ten years later moved to its present home on the lakeshore of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Today about 2,800 students attend Carthage.
Carthage’s current president is Dr. John Swallow, and his wife, Cameron Swallow, is a national leader of Braver Angels.
All delegates who pay for basic registration will be provided with on-campus housing for a 3-night stay (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night) at Carthage College.
